Dr. Kun Huang received his BS degrees in Biological Science and Computer Science from Tsinghua University in 1996 and his MS degrees in Physiology, Electrical Engineering, and Mathematics from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). He then received his PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering also from UIUC in 2004 with a focus on computer vision and machine learning. He was a faculty member in the Department of Biomedical Informatics at The Ohio State University (OSU) from 2004 to 2017 where he later served as the Associate Dean for Genome Informatics and Director for the Division of Bioinformatics and Computational Biology. He joined Indiana University as the Director of Data Science and Informatics for the IU Precision Health Initiative (PHI), the IUSM PHI Chair for Genomic Data Science, and Assistant Dean for Data Science of Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) in 2017.
Currently he is the Chair of the Department of Biostatistics and Health Data Science and the Associate Director for Data Science of the IU Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center. As the Director for Data Science and informatics for the Precision Health Initiative at Indiana University, he is leading the development of the Data Science program at IUSM. His research interests include computational pathology, translational informatics, heath data science, and machine learning. He is an elected Fellow of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE).
Dr. Huang has been leading and coordinating the biomedical data science and informatics (DSI) pillar for the IU Precision Health Initiative including data analysis, infrastructure, working force development, and collaboration with industrial partners such as Eli Lilly and IU Health. During the past four years, DSI recruited ten faculty members and a large number of trainees in biomedical data science from a diverse background. The merge between the DSI team and the Department of Biostatistics in early 2021 led to the newly named Department of Biostatistics and Health Data Science. As the new Chair of the department, he is working closely with Dr. Tatiana Foroud in expanding the collaborations with industrial partners, developing new curriculum and training programs in biomedical data science, and recruiting new faculty members to develop a leading biomedical data science program.
