Biography

David Crandall directs the Luddy Artificial Intelligence Center and the Center for Machine Learning. His research is focused on developing and investigating Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning-based techniques for Computer Vision, where the goal is for computers to be able to perceive the visual world around them. His work has three main facets. One is to develop new foundational techniques in computer vision, including object detection, action recognition, 3d scene reconstruction, etc., by applying and advancing the state of the art of deep learning and other machine learning techniques. The second is in interdisciplinary research with computer vision and computer vision to help answer scientific questions in fields such as psychology, chemistry, and biology. The third is to develop and apply computer vision techniques to practical applications.

Since receiving funding through AnalytiXIN, Dr. Crandall has had 14 peer reviewed papers accepted, has had four new grants and contracts awarded, and received the Sonneborn Award for exemplary research and teaching at IU. He has also been invited to speak at numerous high-profile events such as the AI for Good Summit at the UN in Geneva and is currently assisting in the planning of the IEEE Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition, one of the most prestigious conferences in computer science.
