Biography

The Schwantes-An Lab’s research is focused on understanding the genetic mechanisms of cardiometabolic diseases with a focus on alcohol-associated liver diseases, pulmonary arterial hypertension, and chronic kidney disease. His research group provides analytical support to several faculty members of IUSM, including Drs. Naga Chalasani, Ankit Desai, and Stephanie Ware.

AnalytiXIN has impacted Dr. Schwantes-An’s research in numerous ways. He has been able to expand his lab which now includes a bioinformatician, a PhD student, a master’s student, and a visiting professor from Korea (genetic epidemiology research). The connections with AnalytiXIN have allowed him opportunities to take on new collaborative projects and group activities such as representing IU on the AnalytiXIN Health Data Asset Core team and the AnalytiXIN Scientific Advisory Working Group. He has also participated in benchmarking for the Health Data Asset and has helped design the governance and intake workflow for the program. In addition, Dr. Schwantes-An has made significant contacts with industry partners, including Community Health Network and Eli Lilly regarding AnalytiXIN, IBRI, & Data Lake, and an ongoing collaboration with Google for research utilizing AI to identify genetic variants that underlie cardiovascular traits.
